Joe de Larios More than the sum of its parts - and the parts are amazing.

In 1989, I was on my way to work and listening to KFJC. They played this track (Helter Stupid) and I was riveted. I had to sit in my car until it finished. 35-ish years later, it still resonates and fascinates.

That this can be found here on Bandcamp is further proof that Bandcamp is a magical place. Favorite track: Helter Stupid CD Title Track.

about

Note : This is NOT the original Negativland album 'Helter Stupid'. It is rather the radio show they did based and expanding upon, the material, themes, and subject matter used in the making of that album.

Tracks 2 and 3 of this program ARE the original 'Helter Stupid' portions taken from the original cd. The Perfect Cut portions of it are not included here. These (Helter Stupid) tracks were played during the original 'Helter Stupid' radio program.

The exact broadcast date of this radio program is not known, but it was probably broadcast before the release of the Negativland album / cd, "Helter Stupid" in 1989. It was probably broadcast in 1988. It is all about The Devil, backwards masking, and so-called 'Satanic' music proving that yes, Satanism (and it's resultant hysteria) is stupid too!

Negativland's 'Monstrous Joke' on the news media:

The concept for 'Helter Stupid', the original cd, and some of the sampled material, came from a San Francisco television news program that was taken in by a media hoax perpetrated by Negativland while promoting its previous album, 'Escape from Noise'.

When their 1987 album, Escape From Noise, proved to be more successful than they expected, Negativland, a sound collage band, canceled the tour they were expected to do and released a fake press release stating the band would be placed in house arrest until investigations concluded as to whether the track "Christianity Is Stupid" was implicated in Brom's murders.

The resulting media craze, stemming from journalists neglecting to fact-check, is lampooned in the title track of their 1989 album, Helter Stupid, whose insert also includes background information behind the band's prank.

The original running time of this Over the Edge show was 5 hours, but we took out the portion, in the original broadcast, where Frank Zappa's 'Porn Wars' was played in its entirety, unchanged, so as not to infringe on Zappa's copyright for that piece.

Fits on 4 CDs. If you are burning this to 80 min. length holding cd/disks the tracks break down like this:

Disk 1: Tracks 1-4
Disk 2: Tracks 6-8
Disk 3: Tracks 9-11
Disk 4: Tracks 12-15

Negativland expressly grants permission to use their radio shows.

All derived material in this program is used fairly, accredited, and transformed (remixed / fragmented / re-contextualized / re-worked) for the purpose of education, cultural reference, and to artistically capture the cultural conversation about the subject matter during the time of this program's creation.

This researched program is the result of an artistic and creative process, which can be documented, and is meant to be heard, and taken in its entirety. Payment is not a prerequisite fee in exchange for content in order to get this package but is considered a voluntary donation toward supporting the creative work and expense behind the program.

Thank you for listening, and thank you for your support.
