about

This is Don Joyce and me, in the mid-90's, mixing this live on KPFA, the explosive finale to our live show which I wound up calling 'Bombscare' (I think he wound up calling it something else). The show was largely about the pervasiveness of BOMBS in our culture, as they exist in so many of the movies at the time, but ALSO in the acts of terrorism (yes, it DID exist pre-9/11 in the Clinton era) which were basically what could be termed 'domestic terrorism' such as The Unabomber, The Olympic Park Bombing (feat. Richard Jewell) and Timothy McVeigh/Oklahoma City, not to mention Pan Am 103.

At the end of the show Don and I just 'blew everything up'. I was working at a video store at the time, and for a year had been collecting these 'explosion' sound effects.

The late comedian George Carlin heard this and was very enthusiastic about it (see next track).

Part of the unspoken theme of the 'Endblast' ending section echoes a piece or a quote from a piece that Carlin made at one time namely, "We got the only National Anthem that mentions 'rockets and bombs' right in the fucken thing!" So it resonated.

I remember vividly that once this 'climax' started really 'rolling' there was a moment where Don Joyce was about as excited as I ever saw him. He practically leapt from his chair, waved his arms excitedly for a moment as if conducting an unseen symphony, and instructed me, off mic, almost breathlessly: "Keep it going! Play it ALL!" as he played The Booper.

I did.

Then, it all ended, Don sat back down. And we both just sat there still for a moment, wide-eyed and speechless.
