about

Part of Morcheeba's song, 'Self Made Man' is heard at the beginning and is mixed with Trevor Blake's reading of 'Self Made Men' which are excerpts from the writings by Frederick Douglass challenging the 'luck' factor notion in the question of what makes a man.

More readings by Trevor Blake, including the original, unmixed spoken word piece used here, can be found at www.amoletters.com (A Man of Letters podcast).

The monologue continues remixed with and NCN mod of David Byrne's song, 'Self-Made Man' from Byrne's album 'David Byrne'. The latter part of Blake's monologue is heard over the karaoke (music only) version of Devo's 'Watch Us Work It'. An echoing of the latter part of the Blake's monologue, regarding work, is heard in a telescoped (shortened) version of 'Sweat' by Oingo Boingo excerpted at the end of this track.
