As the Two-Minute Hate at the Ministry of Truth prepares, Winston Smith (John Hurt in the 1984 film) remembers visiting a proletariat prostitute 3 years ago on a dark evening.

Winston Smith (John Hurt) works at the Ministry of Truth. We hear as he changes a historical record, which is part of his job. We hear a prisoner's confession in the background, on the ever present telescreen. We hear his poem 'under the spreading chestnut tree' which refers to the Chestnut Tree Cafe where embarrassed party officials go to hang out.
