The Thought Police

from The 1984 Remix Project by NCN

/

about

The song starts softly with the song 'Julia' by The Beatles which is from the Beatles' 'White Album'... over this song, we hear Julia and Winston talking in their rented room. They admire a prole woman putting up laundry and singing a song. Suddenly, they are captured by The Thought Police in a shocking and frightening scene at the start of which, the song 'Julia' ends abruptly.

For more info on the song 'Julia' by The Beatles see:

en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Julia_%28The_Beatles_song%29

The song is about John Lennon's mother 'Julia' and her loss. In the scene which follows, Winston says (in the novel version of the story) that it was the last time he saw Julia, even though they meet again at the end of the book.

lyrics

Half of what I say is meaningless
But I say it just to reach you,
Julia

Julia, Julia, oceanchild, calls me
So I sing a song of love, Julia
Julia, seashell eyes, windy smile, calls me
So I sing a song of love, Julia

Her hair of floating sky is shimmering, glimmering,
In the sun

Julia, Julia, morning moon, touch me
So I sing a song of love, Julia

When I cannot sing my heart
I can only speak my mind, Julia

Julia, sleeping sand, silent cloud, touch me
So I sing a song of love, Julia
Hum hum hum...calls me
So I sing a song of love for Julia, Julia, Julia
